A weekend full of indulgence, family, and great wines in the Wachau

Sometimes, you don't need to travel far to feel like you're on vacation. My past weekend was exactly such a moment—a few days with family, time to breathe, and unforgettable culinary delights at Kräuterreich by Vitus Winkler. This multi-award-winning restaurant stands for top-tier Austrian cuisine, regionality, and exceptional culinary experiences.

These are the moments when you realize how valuable shared experiences are. Away from everyday life, surrounded by impressive nature and cuisine that combines regionality, craftsmanship, and creativity at the highest level, memories are created that last.

To celebrate this special weekend, a wine was poured in the evening that delights me anew every time: a Grüner Veltliner from Grabenwerkstatt in Wachau. For me, this wine is one of the most exciting representatives of Austrian wine culture. With its freshness, elegance, and precise minerality, it perfectly expresses the unique character of the Spitzer Graben in Wachau.

As an accompaniment to a finely prepared char, the Grüner Veltliner showed its lightness and finesse. With the subsequent hearty venison ragout, the Wachau wine developed impressive depth while remaining lively and fresh. This versatility is precisely what makes great Wachau wines ideal companions for sophisticated wine pairings; they complement a menu without overshadowing it.

But what makes this wine even more special for me is something else: I know the people behind the bottle. I had the opportunity to personally visit the winemakers of Grabenwerkstatt, learn about their philosophy, and experience the passion with which they produce their wines. Since then, every sip tastes even more authentic. You don't just drink a wine – you experience the story, the origin, and the people behind it.
