Blaufränkisch is a cross between the autochthonous grape varieties Sbulzina and Weißer Heunisch and is the leading quality grape variety of Mittelburgenland, to which it has given the nickname "Blaufränkischland". The "Austrian Burgundy" is primarily cultivated in the countries of the former Habsburg monarchy. Typical characteristics are deep, rather cool forest berry or cherry aromas with strong acidity and a certain herbaceousness. Blaufränkisch produces well-structured wines with prominent tannins that are boisterous in their youth but develop velvety facets with maturity.
