  • Wines from Slovenia: Europe's Best-Kept Wine Secret

    by Marco Fuchs

Every wine lover knows France, Italy, and Spain. But between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, there's a wine country that still too rarely ends up in our glasses: Slovenia. This small country boasts a long wine tradition and surprises with impressive diversity. Mediterranean climate meets alpine influences, international grape varieties meet regional specialties, and traditional winemaking meets a modern generation of winemakers.

    Small wine regions, great diversity

Slovenia's wine world is spread across three major regions: Primorska, Podravje, and Posavje. The west, around Goriška Brda and the Vipava Valley, is particularly exciting. Its proximity to Italy and the Adriatic Sea provides warmer conditions and produces characterful white wines as well as elegant red wines. In the northeast, a cooler climate shapes viticulture, yielding fresh, aromatic white wines.

There's also much to discover among the grape varieties. Besides Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, regional varieties play an important role. Rebula, known in Italy as Ribolla Gialla, can be wonderfully fresh and mineral, but also complex and structured. Šipon, internationally known as Furmint, captivates with vibrant acidity and great character.

Orange Wine, natural wine, and a unique signature

Slovenia is also an exciting destination for Orange Wine and natural wine. Traditional methods, such as longer skin contact for white wines, are combined by many winemakers with modern vinification. This results in wines that consciously stand out from the ordinary and clearly show their origin.

This is precisely what makes Slovenian wine so interesting: instead of a uniform style, you'll find an enormous range from straightforward, fresh white wines to powerful red wines and exceptional orange wines.
