  • Frauwallner Winery: Great wines from the Styrian Volcanic Region

    by Marco Fuchs

The Frauwallner winery in Straden is one of the well-known addresses for high-quality Styrian wine. Walter Frauwallner stands for wines with strong character that clearly express their origin and bring the special features of the Styrian Volcanic Region into the glass. Sauvignon Blanc, Morillon, and Pinot Blanc, in particular, play a central role.

Walter Frauwallner: Quality with a clear signature

Since Walter Frauwallner took over responsibility for the wine cellar in 2002, the former mixed agricultural farm has consistently developed into a quality-oriented winery. Today, about 30 hectares of vineyards are cultivated. The focus is not on wines that are as uniform as possible, but rather on the diverse soils, vineyard sites, and microclimates around Straden.

This philosophy shapes the style of the Frauwallner winery: precise fruit, spice, minerality, and a clear sense of origin. The single-vineyard wines in particular demonstrate how strongly soil and location can influence the character of a wine.

Volcanic soils and special vineyard sites

Straden is located in the Styrian Volcanic Region, an extraordinary wine region in the southeast of Styria. Volcanic rock, limestone, gravel, and varying altitudes create exciting conditions for viticulture here.

Among Frauwallner's most important sites are the Ried Buch, Ried Stradener Rosenberg, Ried Steintal, and Ried Altes Steinkreuz. Each of these sites has its own character. The Ried Buch is considered a special heart of the winery and produces powerful, complex, and long-lived white wines.

Sauvignon Blanc, Morillon, and Pinot Blanc

Anyone wishing to get to know Frauwallner wine can hardly ignore Sauvignon Blanc. This grape variety, so important for Styria, is produced in various levels of origin – from the Vulkanland Steiermark DAC and the local Straden wine to the sophisticated single-vineyard wine.

Also Morillon, the Styrian name for Chardonnay, and Pinot Blanc are among the house's important varieties. The range is complemented by Welschriesling, Yellow Muscat, Pinot Gris, and Traminer, among others. At Frauwallner, one can excellently discover how differently grape variety, soil, and origin interact.

From regional wine to grand single-vineyard wine

The assortment follows the origin pyramid of Styrian wine. Regional wines from the Styrian Volcanic Region offer an ideal introduction, while the local wines from Straden are already more strongly characterized by their immediate origin. At the top are the single-vineyard wines, where individual vineyards and their unique properties take center stage.

Especially wines from the Ried Buch Grosse STK Ried or the Ried Stradener Rosenberg 1. STK Ried show the high standards of the winery. Here, it is about depth, structure, minerality, and aging potential – and about bringing the specific site into the glass as unmistakably as possible.

    Frauwallner: Styrian wine with origin

The Frauwallner winery combines modern winemaking with a clear focus on origin and terroir. Walter Frauwallner creates wines that impress not only with their fruit, but above all with their character, structure, and the differences of their vineyard sites.

Anyone looking to discover high-quality wine from Styria will find an impressive spectrum at Frauwallner, from fresh regional wine to complex single-vineyard wine. A winery that shows how exciting Sauvignon Blanc, Morillon, and Pinot varieties from the Styrian Volcanic Region can be.
