Description
The Clos du Roy is a comparatively recent addition to the Domaine's portfolio. Galeyrand acquired the 0.37-hectare parcel only a few years ago; 2021 was his first vintage from this site. The Pinot Noir vines were planted in 1980 and are located on a mid-slope, east to southeast-facing vineyard.
Clos du Roy has historically been one of Marsannay's most prestigious terroirs. The soil is characterized by well-draining limestone scree, beneath which lie marl and iron-rich clay components. The site has a long history: originally, the vineyard belonged to the Dukes of Burgundy and was named Clos des Ducs. After the transfer of Burgundian possessions to the French Crown in 1477, the name Clos du Roy emerged.
Galeyrand crafts his Clos du Roy with the ambition of a great single-vineyard wine. Fermentation occurs spontaneously, a small portion of whole clusters may be included in the vinification, and the wine then ages predominantly in used Burgundy barrels. In 2024, production was extremely small – only around 1,000 bottles were produced. The wine is accordingly concentrated, yet remains true to the winemaker's elegant style: a fine, precise Marsannay with remarkable depth and great aging potential.
