The The 2022 Cornas from Domaine Verset A&E is an outstanding Syrah from five renowned vineyards in the Cornas wine-growing village in the French Rhône Valley. This red wine is still somewhat closed in its youth, but its complex nose already reveals dark berries, spices, and a subtle granite note. On the palate, it impresses with its dense structure, precise tannins, and a long, spicy finish. A wine of great elegance and aging potential, it captures the essence of the Cornas terroir.
Emmanuelle Verset is the sixth generation to continue the family winery tradition. The Domaine cultivates 4.2 hectares in Cornas and Saint-Péray, including vines over 100 years old in the "Les Mazards" and "La Geynale" vineyards. The wines are produced using traditional whole-cluster fermentation and aging in used barriques, which gives them a unique depth and mineral tension.
The Cornas appellation – its name deriving from the Celtic word for "scorched earth" – lies on the right bank of the Rhône. It is characterized by steep, terraced granite slopes and a hot, dry microclimate. The soil, a mixture of granite, limestone, and clay, stores heat during the day and releases it to the vines at night, giving the Syrah grapes intense aromas and a pronounced minerality. The Mistral wind dries the vines quickly after rain, preventing fungal diseases and resulting in concentrated, powerful wines. Cornas is one of the smallest, yet most important, appellations in the Northern Rhône.
Syrah (internationally known as Shiraz), the queen of the Rhône Valley, captivates with its deep, dark color, robust tannins, and complex aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, pepper, and violet. Originally a cross between Dureza and Mondeuse Blanche, it thrives particularly well on the steep granite slopes of the northern Rhône, where it produces varietal masterpieces in appellations such as Crozes-Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas. Syrah is a "diva": demanding to cultivate, but aromatically very rewarding. Ideal with game dishes, lamb, or aged cheeses.
The vinification of Domaine Verset A&E's 2022 Cornas follows traditional methods: the grapes are fermented whole-cluster in open vats for two weeks, with manual foot-treading in the morning and pump-overs in the evening. This technique promotes the extraction of aromas and tannins, while also imparting a delicate, green spiciness and additional structure from the stems. After pressing, the wine matures for 15 months in 3- to 8-year-old barriques (225–440 liters) from various French coopers, which preserves the fruit and accentuates the terroir notes of granite and herbs.
