The Morgon Vieilles Vignes 2024 from Marcel Lapierre is a powerful, elegant Gamay from old vines in the renowned Côte du Py vineyard in Beaujolais. Its color is deep garnet red, and the nose exudes intense aromas of ripe sour cherries, violets, licorice, and a subtle mineral note reminiscent of the granitic slate soil. The grapes come from vines up to 70 years old , cultivated biodynamically .
On the palate, the 2024 Morgon Vieilles Vignes reveals a dense, velvety texture, precise tannins, and vibrant freshness. Aromas of black cherries, blackberries, and a delicate spiciness meld with a mineral depth that lends the wine impressive length. A Morgon of great structure and elegance, it delights both young and after several years of aging.
Beaujolais, nestled between Burgundy and the Rhône, is one of France's most vibrant wine regions. Known for its fresh, fruit-forward red wines made from the Gamay grape, the area covers 12,000 hectares and encompasses ten prestigious crus – including Morgon, Fleurie, and Moulin-à-Vent. The region benefits from a temperate climate with continental influences and granitic, schist-rich soils that impart the wines their characteristic minerality and elegance.
Gamay, the signature grape of Beaujolais, captivates with its vibrant fruit, soft tannins, and floral aromas. Originally from Burgundy, it found its ideal terroir in Beaujolais: the barren granite soils and temperate climate impart aromas of red berries (raspberry, cherry), violets, and a delicate hint of pepper. Gamay is an early-ripening, high-yielding variety that impresses both as a young, fresh wine and as a complex, age-worthy Cru (e.g., Morgon or Fleurie).
