The Bronzelack from Schloss Johannisberg is a Rheingau Riesling with the straightforward character of Schloss Johannisberg, pure and unadulterated. It presents itself in a light straw yellow. Aromas of peach and fresh pineapple, yellow apple and mirabelle plum, accompanied by herbal spice with sage and thyme. On the palate, it is invitingly juicy with a firm texture. Crisp with vibrant acidity and dense minerality. The partial vinification in large wooden barrels contributes to its structure and length.
The fully enclosed 50-hectare single vineyard at Johannisberg Castle encircles the castle in a semicircle and slopes down in terraces to the south towards the Rhine. Wine has been cultivated here for over 1200 years, and for the last 300 years, this has been arguably one of the most beautiful and prestigious sites for Riesling cultivation. The soil is characterized by Taunus quartzite with a layer of fertile loam and a layer of loess, as well as a small amount of iron dioxide, which gives the soil a reddish hue.
With almost 80% of the vineyard area, Riesling dominates the Rheingau wine region, thriving on calcareous, loess, and clay soils that impart a distinctive acidity and complex minerality. Charlemagne promoted its cultivation as early as the 9th century, and to this day, some of the oldest and most prestigious single vineyards in the world are located here. Rheingau Riesling is extremely popular among winemakers and connoisseurs alike for its terroir-driven character and versatility.
Hand-harvested and gently pressed. Fermented at 35% in large oak barrels made from the estate's own oak. Subsequently aged on the fine lees until bottling in April 2024.
