Description
The renowned Forster Ungeheuer vineyard is one of the most famous top sites in the Palatinate region, located west of the wine village of Forst on the slopes of the Haardt mountains. Its name harks back to the former town clerk of Deidesheim, Johann Adam Ungeheuer, who died in 1699. His tombstone can still be seen next to the old church in Mußbach. The site also gained fame through Otto von Bismarck, who once said of a wine from here: "This monster tastes monstrously good."
For the Forster Ungeheuer Riesling GG 2024, the grapes were selectively hand-picked in several passes to ensure only the best fruit was processed. 30% of the wine was aged in stainless steel tanks, preserving freshness and precision, while 70% was vinified in traditional large wooden barrels, lending the wine additional structure and depth. After fermentation, the base wines matured on their full lees until bottling in July, allowing complexity and finesse to further develop.
On the nose, this "Große Gewächs" Riesling from the Palatinate displays delicate aromas of Nashi pear, white peach, and a hint of citrus zest. The aromatic profile is complemented by herbaceous, ethereal notes reminiscent of freshly brewed herbal tea, adding further depth to the wine. On the palate, the Forster Ungeheuer GG presents itself as taut, precise, and straightforward, supported by a vibrant, perfectly integrated acidity. The wine appears cool, clear, and mineral, with impressive tension and a long, dynamic finish.
As a versatile food companion, this Riesling pairs excellently with grilled vegetables with lemon oil, Asian-spiced dishes, or meals with fresh herbs. Its freshness, minerality, and subtle spice make it an elegant and precise wine for discerning connoisseurs.
