  • An Experience at Weingut Neumeister

The answer is actually obvious: Sauvignon Blanc. After all, we Styrians can proudly claim that we are among the absolute world leaders when it comes to this grape variety.

This time, I ventured a little away from my classic wineries and into the Vulkanland. More precisely, to a winemaker whom I have long held in high esteem: Weingut Neumeister. And if it's Neumeister, then it has to be something special: Sauvignon Blanc Moarfeitl 2012.

For me, Moarfeitl is by far one of the most exciting and certainly one of the best sites of the winery. In addition, 2012 is my personal favorite vintage of the 2010s in Styria. A vintage that, in my opinion, is still somewhat underestimated today. Perhaps also because it stands between some very great and significantly more powerful vintages. 2011 and 2013 made quite an impression, followed later by 2015, 2017, and 2019, which were other exceptional years for Styria. Precisely for this reason, 2012 sometimes recedes into the background.
Completely unjustly, as this glass has once again shown.

After all these years, the Moarfeitl 2012 presents itself wonderfully matured and at the same time astonishingly vibrant. On the nose and palate, a lot of ripe yellow fruit, a beautiful depth, and that wonderful maturity that a great Sauvignon Blanc only develops with age. In addition, there are intense spicy notes and something that particularly thrilled me: a delicate hint of star anise.
Not loud, not overloaded, but profound, matured, and more exciting with every sip.

Exactly these bottles remind me why I enjoy drinking aged Styrian Sauvignon Blancs so much. They have nothing to hide internationally, quite the opposite. An absolutely magnificent wine that I would love to drink more often.

The only problem? I can't find another bottle of it in my cellar.

But perhaps that is precisely the beauty of such wines: some bottles don't accompany you constantly. They appear at some point, are opened, remain in memory, and then are simply history.
