  • Domaine Albert Boxler – Grand Wines from the Granite Slopes of Alsace

    2 comments by Marco Fuchs

Those who appreciate great white wines from Alsace will sooner or later discover Domaine Albert Boxler. This family winery from Niedermorschwihr is one of the region's most distinctive addresses, renowned particularly for its Riesling and Gewürztraminer with clear origins. Instead of focusing on superficial effects, Boxler emphasizes precision, craftsmanship, and the expression of individual vineyards. The famous Grand Cru sites Sommerberg and Brand play a crucial role in this philosophy.

The Boxler family's history in winemaking spans several centuries. Today, the Domaine is managed by Jean Boxler, who has consistently developed the house's philosophy. The focus is not on producing wines that taste exactly the same every year. Quite the opposite: the vintage, grape variety, and especially the respective vineyard are allowed to express their own character. This makes Albert Boxler's wines particularly exciting, as astonishing differences can arise even within a single grape variety.

Sommerberg and Brand – Granite as the Foundation of Great Wines

Around Niedermorschwihr, the vineyards sometimes rise spectacularly. The steep slopes require a lot of manual labor and simultaneously offer excellent conditions for characterful white wines. The two Grand Crus Sommerberg and Brand are particularly important for Boxler, whose granite soils can lend the wines a striking mineral tension.

Sommerberg, in particular, is closely associated with Riesling. The wines here can be precise, taut, and at the same time astonishingly profound. A prime example is the Albert Boxler Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru „Jeunes Vignes“ 2022. "Jeunes Vignes" refers to younger vines, yet the great origin is clearly palpable in the wine. Citrus and yellow fruit notes meet herbs, stony minerality, and lively acidity. A Riesling that doesn't stand out through volume, but through tension and length. With some air in the glass, it gains additional expression and pairs excellently with fish, seafood, or delicate poultry.

A completely different side of the winery is shown by the Albert Boxler Gewürztraminer „Brand“ Grand Cru 2023. Gewürztraminer is inherently one of Alsace's most expressive grape varieties, and in Brand, this intense aroma finds an exciting counterpoint. Roses, exotic fruits, and spices provide richness and fragrance, while the origin gives the wine structure and depth. Precisely this combination makes great Gewürztraminer interesting: it can be opulent but should not appear heavy. This wine can be particularly enjoyable with strong cheese, foie gras, or spicy Asian cuisine.

Albert Boxler doesn't always have to be Grand Cru

However, to get acquainted with Domaine Albert Boxler, one doesn't immediately have to reach for the great single-vineyard wines. Especially the more accessible wines beautifully demonstrate the consistency of the house's style. The Albert Boxler Riesling 2024 is an excellent example of this. Fresh citrus fruit, clear acidity, and a fine mineral note make it a straightforward and versatile Riesling. It has enough sophistication to engage wine lovers, yet remains uncomplicated enough for everyday enjoyment. With oysters, sushi, fish, or simply as an evening glass, it's a wonderful introduction to the world of Boxler.

Even more relaxed is the Albert Boxler Pinot Blanc 2024. Pinot Blanc in Alsace often stands somewhat in the shadow of Riesling and Gewürztraminer, but it should not be underestimated, especially from good producers. Here, it's less about grand aromatic gestures and more about freshness, delicate fruit, and elegant drinkability. This is precisely what makes it a versatile food companion – for example, with tarte flambée, quiche, vegetables, fish, or poultry. It's one of those wines that you don't have to philosophize about for hours, yet you quickly realize that there's much more in the glass than just a simple everyday white wine.

For lovers of aromatic wines, the Albert Boxler Gewürztraminer Réserve 2023. is once again worthwhile. It showcases the typically intense side of the grape variety with ripe fruit, floral notes, exotic hints, and a spicy aroma. The Réserve has more body and presence than the lighter wines of the house, without being solely about power. It's precisely the balance between lush fruit and structure that makes it interesting. An excellent partner for Munster cheese, terrines, curries, and other spicy dishes – or a wine to be consciously enjoyed on its own.

Which Albert Boxler wine is the right one?

For an introduction, the Pinot Blanc 2024 is recommended if you're looking for an uncomplicated and elegant white wine. The Riesling 2024, on the other hand, is the right choice for those who want to get to know Boxler's straightforward, mineral style. If you prefer something more intense and aromatic, you should opt for the Gewürztraminer Réserve 2023.

It gets even more exciting with the Grand Crus. The Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru „Jeunes Vignes“ 2022 demonstrates why Riesling and granite can form such a fascinating combination in Alsace. The Gewürztraminer Brand Grand Cru 2023, on the other hand, represents the more opulent side of the region, combining intense aromatics with a great origin.

Domaine Albert Boxler – Alsace with Character

What ultimately makes Domaine Albert Boxler so interesting is the diversity within a clearly recognizable philosophy. From charming Pinot Blanc over classic Riesling and aromatic Gewürztraminer to the great wines from Sommerberg and Brand, it's always about the same question: What can this vineyard, this grape variety, and this vintage tell?

Precisely for this reason, it's worth trying more than just a single bottle. For example, comparing the Albert Boxler Riesling 2024 alongside the Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru „Jeunes Vignes“ 2022 provides a fascinating insight into how strongly origin can change a wine. The same applies to the Gewürztraminer Réserve compared to the Brand Grand Cru.

Albert Boxler thus represents a side of Alsace that goes far beyond aromatic white wines. Steep vineyards, granite soils, traditional grape varieties, and an uncompromising focus on origin result in wines with personality and make Domaine Albert Boxler an address that every Alsace and Riesling fan should have experienced in their glass at least once.

Boxler geht eigentlich immer.
