  • Sting makes wine: Tenuta Il Palagio in Tuscany

    by Marco Fuchs

Sting can do more than just global hits. Together with his wife Trudie Styler, the British musician has created a second home in Tuscany – and is producing wine there. Today, the Tenuta Il Palagio produces organic wines with evocative names like Message in a Bottle, Sister Moon, or When We Dance. At first glance, this might sound like clever celebrity marketing. However, behind it lies a genuine estate with history, Tuscan character, and some truly exciting bottles.

Tenuta Il Palagio: Sting's winery in Tuscany

The Tenuta Il Palagio is located south of Florence near Figline Valdarno, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and the typically hilly landscape of Tuscany. The historic property looks back on several centuries of agricultural history. In 1997, Sting and Trudie Styler bought the estate and began restoring the villa, buildings, and farmland.

Today, Il Palagio is far more than just Sting's vacation home under the Italian sun. The estate produces wine, olive oil, and honey, in addition to fruit and vegetables from its own farm. Organic cultivation is particularly important here. The vineyards have also been partially replanted and consistently developed further.

And yes: the fact that Sting of all people would eventually become a Tuscan winemaker has a certain charm.

Message in a Bottle – of course this wine had to exist

Anyone named Sting who bottles wine really can't avoid making a Message in a Bottle . The classic from The Police is now also one of the most famous wine names of the Tenuta Il Palagio.

As a red wine, the Message in a Bottle Sangiovese focuses on the most important grape variety in Tuscany. The wine displays plenty of red fruit, spice, and a firm but accessible structure. This is exactly the kind of red wine that automatically makes you think of pasta with ragù, wood-fired pizza, or a plate of salami and pecorino.

Those who prefer white wine will also get the message: Message in a Bottle Vermentino brings the Mediterranean side of the winery into your glass. White fruits, apricot, floral notes, and herbs meet freshness and spice. A wine for antipasti, fish, seafood – or simply for a long summer evening.

When We Dance: Chianti with a Sting soundtrack

It gets even more classic with When We Dance Chianti DOCG. Here, Il Palagio shows its typically Tuscan side. Sangiovese provides red fruit, sour cherry, and that characteristic freshness, accompanied by floral and Mediterranean spicy notes.

The beauty of it: you don't have to be a Sting fan to appreciate this wine. When We Dance works perfectly well as a classic Chianti for anyone who likes fruity, spicy Italian red wines. You can't go wrong pairing it with pasta with tomato sauce, lasagna, or a good pizza.

    Sister Moon: Sting's great red

If you want something more powerful, you end up with Sister Moon Rosso Toscana IGT. This wine is one of the flagship products of Tenuta Il Palagio and shows the more ambitious side of the winery. Dark berries, blackberries, pepper, and licorice define the aroma, complemented by a full body and supple tannins.

Sister Moon is therefore less of a quick wine to have with pizza and more of a bottle for which you reach for a larger glass. It feels perfectly at home with steak, game, braised meat, or a strong cheese.

    Sacred Love and La Regista

Beyond the well-known song titles, there is plenty to discover at Il Palagio. Sacred Love Rosso Toscana IGT combines ripe cherries with violets, licorice, and dark chocolate. A dense, elegant red wine with soft tannins and a real sense of Tuscany.

With La Regista Chianti Riserva DOCG , there is also a more aged representative of the classic Chianti style. Berries and ripe cherries meet spicier notes of licorice, tobacco, and roasted aromas. Those who prefer their Chianti a bit more powerful and complex will likely find what they are looking for here.

For warmer days, there is also a rosé with New Day Rosato. Raspberry and cherry provide fruit, while a light spice gives the wine enough character that it doesn't just pass as a pretty terrace wine.

Are Sting's wines just celebrity wines?

That is probably the most exciting question regarding Tenuta Il Palagio. After all, there are plenty of celebrity wines out there now. Sometimes there is real passion behind them, other times it is mostly just a well-known name on the label.

With Sting, the matter is more interesting. Il Palagio is not a quickly invented celebrity wine label, but a historic estate that Sting and Trudie Styler have been restoring and developing agriculturally since the late 1990s. Wine production is part of a larger organic operation and not just a merchandising project alongside a music career.

Of course, the song titles play a role in the marketing. Why not? After all, it is much harder to forget a Sangiovese called Message in a Bottle than the next "Rosso Toscana Number 27." What is decisive, however, is that there are genuinely serious Tuscan wines behind the names.

Music in the name, Tuscany in the glass

Tenuta Il Palagio is one of those stories where wine suddenly becomes a bit more entertaining. You have a British rock star who falls in love with Tuscany, restores a centuries-old estate, and eventually writes his songs on wine bottles. This could end up quite cheesy – but it works surprisingly well here.

If you love Sting, you naturally have an additional reason to try the wines with Sister Moon, When We Dance, and Message in a Bottle. Even if you don't care much for The Police, you will still find exciting examples of the modern Tuscany behind them.

And honestly: We prefer a Message in a Bottle that tastes like Sangiovese over a message in a bottle anyway.

You can of course find Sting's wines at Trinkvergnügen.
