The soil in South Styria often consists of a type called Opok. Opok is a marly, calcareous, sedimentary rock formation. This soil type is particularly suitable for viticulture because it provides good drainage. Some vineyards may also have gravel soils, which also promote good water permeability.

The general flavor profile of Pinot Gris includes aromas of ripe yellow fruits such as pears, apples, and peaches. These wines can also exhibit a subtle mineral note. Pinot Gris often shows moderate acidity and a full body. In some cases, winemakers may age Pinot Gris in oak barrels, which can impart additional complex aromas to the wine.
