Description
The HILL 1 2020 is a cuvée of Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, and Merlot. With this blend, Hillinger combines two of the most important Austrian red wine varieties with Merlot. Zweigelt provides ripe fruit and suppleness, Blaufränkisch adds spice, freshness, and structure, while Merlot contributes additional richness and depth.
For HILL 1, strict selection takes place as early as the vineyard. Low yields and fully ripe, healthy grapes form the foundation for the wine's concentration. Vinification is followed by a long maturation in new French barriques, which gives the wine additional structure and allows the fruit, tannins, and subtle roasted aromas to integrate.
The 2020 vintage presents HILL 1 as a powerful and profound Burgenland wine with dark fruit, spicy accents, and a dense tannin structure. Despite its concentration, the wine retains sufficient freshness and balance. A red wine for long bottle aging and, at the same time, a highly characteristic expression of Leo Hillinger's ambitious red wine philosophy.
