Description
The renowned Forster Pechstein vineyard is one of the best and most distinctive Riesling sites in the Pfalz region, covering a total of 15.3 hectares, of which 0.75 hectares are owned by the winery. The name "Pechstein" derives from the high proportion of black basalt rock of volcanic origin, which is particularly prevalent in this site and gives the wines their unmistakable minerality. The dark, pitch-colored stones not only characterize the name but also the character of this exceptional terroir.
The grapes for the Forster Pechstein Riesling GG 2024 were selectively hand-picked in several passes and then pressed and vinified separately to optimally bring out the quality of each parcel. 60% of the wine was aged in wooden barrels with spontaneous fermentation, while the remaining portion was fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and precision. After fermentation, the wine matured on its lees until bottling in July 2025, which gives it additional complexity and structure.
On the nose, this Große Gewächs Riesling initially shows a fine reduction, reminiscent of flint and wet stone – a typical characteristic of great wines from Pechstein. With some air, intense aromas of lemon zest, ripe citrus fruit, and delicate herbal notes, reminiscent of fresh thyme, unfold.
On the palate, the Forster Pechstein GG is dense, powerful, and concentrated, with clear structure and noticeable body. Despite its intensity, the wine never feels heavy but convinces with precise pressure, cool minerality, and impressive balance. The varietal character is evident in smoky, slightly bacon-like notes, combined with deep fruit and subtle spice. The lively, well-integrated acidity carries the wine into a long, mineral-driven finish with lasting tension.
