The Icon HILL 2017 stands at the pinnacle of the Leo Hillinger range and is conceived as the winery's extraordinary prestige project. Only strictly selected grape material is used for this wine, which is hand-picked at extremely low yields. Hillinger deliberately keeps the exact composition of this red wine cuvée a secret – even with the release of the 2017 vintage, the grape varieties used and their proportions are not disclosed.
Vinification is designed for maximum concentration and an exceptionally long evolution. Following approximately two weeks of fermentation on the skins, the wine remains on the skins for another four weeks. Malolactic fermentation also takes place while still on the skins. This gives the Icon HILL an intense structure and a robust foundation for its subsequent maturation even during the winemaking process.
The aging process is particularly exceptional: the 2017 vintage spent at least seven years in used barriques before being released to the market. This long barrel maturation is not intended to be characterized by dominant new oak, but rather to give the concentrated wine time to refine its tannins and integrate the individual components of the cuvée.
Only 999 bottles of the Icon HILL 2017 were produced. With 15% vol. alcohol, just 0.7 g/l residual sugar, and its long barrel maturation, it is a powerful, concentrated red wine designed for longevity. An exceptional collector's item within the Hillinger range, deliberately produced in only a very small quantity.
This is what to expect when drinking
Dark forest berries, blackberry, cherry and preserved plum combine with black pepper, liquorice and delicate roasted aromas.
Dense and concentrated with dark fruit, fine tannins, and well-integrated acidity. Spicy and roasted nuances accompany the powerful structure into a long, balanced finish.
Ideal with steak, boiled beef, game dishes, pork medallions, BBQ, or aged cheese – also excellent on its own for special occasions.
