Description
The Blaufränkisch Leithaberg DAC 2021 showcases a distinctly terroir-driven side of the Leo Hillinger winery. Around Jois, the warm Pannonian climate of Lake Neusiedl meets the cooler influences of the Leitha Mountains. Blaufränkisch in particular benefits from this interplay: the grapes achieve excellent physiological ripeness while retaining the freshness and tension characteristic of the variety.
Decisive for the wine's character are the limestone and slate-influenced soils of the Leithaberg. They clearly distinguish this origin from the heavier soils of other Burgenland red wine regions. Here, Blaufränkisch develops less opulent fruit, favoring instead a tighter structure, fine spice, and a pronounced mineral character.
The grapes are sourced from organically farmed vineyards and are carefully selected. After fermentation, the wine is given sufficient time to mature in wood. The aging process is not intended to mask the fruit, but rather to refine the tannins and add depth to the Blaufränkisch. As a result, the typical dark berry fruit remains closely tied to the spice, freshness, and mineral imprint of the Leithaberg.
The 2021 vintage provides excellent conditions for this. The wine combines concentration with a precise acid structure, showcasing Blaufränkisch from its elegant, rather cool side. A Leithaberg DAC full of character, where origin, spice, and mineral tension clearly take precedence over raw power.
