Louis Billard's Volnay "Santenots" 1er Cru 2024 is an expressive Pinot Noir that combines elegance and depth in a particularly exciting way. The Premier Cru site of Santenots traditionally produces wines with a little more power and structure, yet preserves the finesse and delicate fragrance for which Volnay is so highly regarded.
In the glass, the wine reveals itself to be complex and precise. Juicy cherries and dark forest berries meet floral notes, fine herbs, and a subtle spiciness. On the palate, it has a beautiful concentration without feeling heavy. Fine-grained tannins provide structure, while lively freshness ensures tension and balance. With a little air, mineral and slightly earthy nuances become more pronounced, giving the wine additional depth.
The finish is long, elegant, and characterized by a delicate spiciness. A sophisticated Volnay Premier Cru that already shows its class when young, but is likely to gain significantly in complexity with further bottle aging.
