Palatinate
When people talk about the Palatinate, they always mean the German Wine Route – that is, the German Wine Route, at around 85 kilometers the longest continuous wine-growing route in the Federal Republic – and at the same time the "longest wine tasting mile in the world", as the local winegrowers gladly offer their products to interested (and thirsty) tourists along the footpaths and cycle paths.
In this region, which has diverse soils but a fairly homogeneous climate, Riesling is clearly number 1 – although Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Müller-Thurgau and even some Sauvignon Blanc can also be found – alongside some regional varieties such as Portugieser or Dornfelder, which are not quite as popular on the world market.
