Description
The Ried Saffran is one of the great Chardonnay vineyards of Southern Styria. The steep slopes around Leutschach, with their limestone-rich soils and cool microclimate, produce wines of enormous precision, mineral depth, and great tension. As an STK vineyard, the Saffran stands for the highest origin quality and a particularly terroir-driven style.
The 2023 vintage presents itself as exceptionally clear and elegant. Despite its concentration, the Chardonnay appears calm and finely structured, with a tight framework and an almost Burgundian style. Ageing in wooden barrels supports the depth and complexity without masking the origin of the vineyard.
Erwin Sabathi consistently relies on a reductive vinification with a lot of patience and a focus on origin. As a result, the Ried Saffran shows great mineral tension, precise structure, and enormous development potential – a characterful Chardonnay with great elegance and length.
