Niederösterreich

The picturesque Wachau region stretches along the Lower Austrian Danube between Melk and Krems and is famous for its terraced vineyards, historic towns, and breathtaking landscapes. It is also renowned for its world-famous wines, among which Riesling and Grüner Veltliner thrive particularly well on its approximately 1,400 hectares of vineyards.

The Rieslings from the Wachau region differ significantly in taste from their counterparts from the Mosel: they are crystal clear, delicate, and possess a mineral vibrancy. Grüner Veltliners, on the other hand, are less acidic but have a spicy, peppery note.

Wachau wines are classified into three quality levels based on their alcohol content: "Steinfeder" encompasses light, delicate wines with up to 11.5% vol., "Federspiel" describes medium-bodied, mostly dry and quite intense wines with 11.5-12.5% vol., and "Smaragd" refers to particularly intense, highly complex and mature wines with 12.5% vol. and above.
