Even in the late 1990s, Péby Faugères was the uncompromising prestige cuvée of the Faugères estate – significantly more concentrated, selective, and luxurious than the classic Grand Vin. The lime and clay-rich soils of Saint-Émilion lend the wine a delicate mineral freshness and remarkable balance, despite its opulent nature.
The 1999 vintage today displays a beautifully matured style. The wine appears soft, profound, and very harmonious, with a silky structure and a great sense of inner calm. Instead of youthful power, maturity, subtle spice, and elegant complexity are now in the foreground. It is precisely this blend of mature Merlot richness and chalky freshness that makes older Péby Faugères vintages so exciting.
The oak aging was deliberately ambitious and modern for its time, but is now fully integrated. This makes the wine round, polished, and very elegant – a mature Saint-Émilion with great depth, refined maturity, and a long, harmonious finish.
